Ministry to the elderly in the Providence community by Pastor Santiago and his wife, Keila, has been on-going and intentional for many years. That ministry has traveled different and varied avenues. Under the direction of Keila Rodriguez, the Step Up Center provided English as a Second Language classes and music classes to people of all ages. It also provided guidance and legal advice to immigrants. Through the years, the Pastor’s home has become a sanctuary for those in need of food, shelter or care as well as the meeting place for the Knitting Club. In addition, Pastor Santiago and Keila have tirelessly visited the sick, the dying and the suffering, traveling to their homes, hospitals and nursing homes. They have been there for families, for the lonely, and those in crisis to offer comfort, direction, prayer, music, and support.
Now, a new ministry for the elderly is developing at Gloria Dei. It is the International Senior Club, which grew out of a desire to provide a special time and place on a regular basis for those seniors who want to continue to be active, socialize, and have fun. It is purposely seeking to develop tolerance, understanding, and harmony among different ethnic groups. It is hoped that various cultural activities will bridge the gap and soften the lines between diverse backgrounds, blend traditions, facilitate communication, and enhance knowledge, peace, and respect.
With the help of a grant from the New England Synod, the International Senior Club will provide lunch, entertainment, cultural events and outings, hymn singing and prayer. We will meet once a month and look forward to you joining us for our first meeting as soon as the restrictions for the Coronavirus are lifted. Come and celebrate our recovery from the pandemic and our new senior, social ministry
